Curriculum

At Batley Grammar School we are proud of the curriculum we offer in the Secondary Phase.  It is broad and balanced, yet provides differing pathways for students depending upon their individual needs.

Education should enable us to respond positively to the opportunities and challenges of the rapidly changing world in which we live and work. We need to be prepared as individuals, both as workers and citizens, with economic, social and cultural change, new work and leisure patterns and with the pace of technological developments. Our curriculum vision supports our school philosophy by offering a broad and balanced curriculum, embracing teaching and learning strategies to reach all students.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) all students follow a personalised curriculum depending on their learning needs. There are 50 lessons per cycle (two weeks) and five per day. During the course of Key Stage 3 all students will study the following subjects:

Art, Computer Technology, Drama, English, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Games, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages (French and Spanish), Music, PHSE, Religious Education, Science and Year 7 Integrated Studies (History, Geography, RS)

Learning Support withdrawal sessions and, Phonics and SULP (The Social Use of Language Programme) sessions, in some cases a reduced curriculum will operate for those students who need it.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), students must study English, Mathematics and Science (either separate Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Combined Science), PE (no examination), Religious Studies (no examination) and PSHCE (no examination). They then choose a further four optional subjects from a suite of GCSE and Level 2 (BTEC and VCERT) qualifications.

Each student is able to make some choices about the Pathway Subjects they study at Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11).

Core subjects remain compulsory, these are: English Language and English Literature, Mathematics and Science. Students are also expected to study a Humanities subject (Geography or History) and most students will study a Modern Foreign Language.

Option subjects currently include: Art, French, BTEC Health and Social Care, History, Computer Science, Music, Computer Technology, PE (VCERT), Drama, Religious Education, Food Preparation and Nutrition, and Spanish.

There is also a careers and progression guidance programme that students follow during the two years of Key Stage 4 (KS4)
